The Glycan Advantage

Why glycans?

Comparison of anti-protein and anti-glycan monoclonal antibodies targeting a cancer cell. Each anti-protein antibody binds one specific membrane protein, while a single anti-glycan antibody binds a tumor-associated glycan epitope displayed across many different membrane proteins.

Cancer rewrites the cell — and the glycans show it.

Unlike proteins, glycans are not directly template-encoded. Their structures are shaped by glycosylation enzymes, cellular metabolism, and signaling. As cancer develops, these processes are reprogrammed, creating tumor-associated glycan patterns that can contribute to immune evasion, altered cell adhesion, and metastatic spread.

Targeting the glycan — not a single protein

Conventional ADCs typically target a single cell-surface protein. Loss or downregulation of that protein can reduce target availability and contribute to treatment resistance.

Our antibodies recognize a tumor-associated glycan epitope presented across multiple protein carriers. This approach is designed to:

  • Broaden the pool of addressable epitopes on the tumor cell surface, rather than relying on the abundance of a single protein target.
  • Reduce dependence on any individual carrier protein, as the same glycan epitope may remain available on other tumor-associated carriers.
Our Business

Three Core Business Areas

Innovative Drug

GlycoNex's core capability is discovering antibodies against tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens. These anti-glycan antibodies anchor a pipeline of ADCs, pro-antibody ADCs, and bispecific ADCs — led by GNX1021, now in Phase 1.

Biosimilar

Two biosimilar programs: SPD8 (denosumab biosimilar, Phase 3 complete), co-developed with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical; and SSR, a biosimilar for an autoimmune disease, developed in-house.
